PEP and the European Union
Poland’s membership in the European Union and adoption of the EU energy market regulations did not affect the business of Polish Energy Partners S.A., but rather confirmed that business assumptions adopted by the Company during its formation were accurate. Since its establishment, PEP S.A. has been operating in line with the EU legislation.
The Community shapes the situation on the power market through DIRECTIVES transposed to legal systems of its Member States. The key directives in this area refer to:
Generation of renewable energy
Directive 2001/77/EC:
The EU promotes renewable energy to reduce dependence on imported energy and improve the condition of the environment. Polish Energy Partners S.A. invests in renewable energy sources based on biomass and wind. In Świecie, we operate the biggest, cutting-edge CFB boiler in Poland adopted for biomass burning.
Reduction of environmental pollution
Directives 2003/87/EC, 2001/80/EC, 280/2004/EC
The Member States are under the obligation to implement relevant mechanisms to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere, in line with the Kyoto Protocol. Gas emissions were reduced considerably in most power facilities operated by Polish Energy Partners S.A. by using environment-friendly technologies and solutions. As a result, our customers will have free emission limits for sale when emission trading is launched in Poland (starting in 2005).
Promotion of efficient energy generation
Directive 2004/8/EC
The Community decided that increased share of co-generation, i.e. combined heat and power generation, is a factor reducing greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere. Therefore, the Community introduced mechanisms to promote this technology of energy generation.
Polish Energy Partners S.A. uses co-generation as the leading technology in its industrial facilities.
Improved market competition
Directive 2003/54/EC
The Community’s strategic goal is to improve competition on the power market by allowing customers to select their energy suppliers. As a result, it will be possible to develop local energy generation sources located close to end customers. All facilities of Polish Energy Partners S.A. are based locally and supply energy to end customers without any transmission costs.
